Zoé Olsommer, memento mori
14 March 2025 @ 9:00 am - 16 March 2025 @ 6:00 pm

“Memento mori » is Latin for « remember that you have to die ».
Zoe’s new project addresses the inevitability of our own death by documenting various deaths that surround us, if we are only willing to see it. It addresses as well death in a symbolic way, be it the death of a parent, a love, a friendship or the death of the ego.
Zoé Olsommer graduated from the Vevey School of Photography in Switzerland, where she participated in several group exhibitions and projections, among others at the Images Festival in Vevey and the Elysée Museum in Lausanne. She lived in Vietnam for a total of nine years where she learnt the refined art of lacquer painting.
For this latest cyanotype project, she’s back to her first love of photography, adopting the same artistic approach to all of her former projects by observing the world around her and its sometimes very personal events from which she draws her inspiration. She is especially sensitive to the intrinsic beauty of vernacular objects and in this case “inanimate beings” that nobody seems to notice. She tries to pay them a tribute by giving them back some of their glory through the beautiful hues of the blue colour inherent to the cyanotype technique. The blue colour is linked to spirituality and also associated to serenity and dreams. So this project is a dreamlike version of our world in an attempt to urge us to live our life to the fullest, while we still can and it acts as a reminder that everything could stop abruptly. She has made Penang her home for the last 6 years now. She exhibited her lacquer paintings recently in a solo show at Hikayat and she participated as well in OSP in one of its previous edition, by exhibiting at COEX.
Zoe will be on site for people to vist and discuss her work on Friday 14th, from 4-5pm.
Zoe will also offer a cyanotype workshop, where people can make their own postcard like cyanotypes, on Friday 14th from 3pm to 4pm. Details here.
