Sumay Cheah: OH! Where Art Meets Everyone

Join Sumay Cheah as she explores how art can go beyond an object or a space and become an experience designed for all. Art is more than what we see – it is what we feel, how we experience and who it welcomes. At its heart, the talk explores the ways art can go beyond an object or a space and become instead an experience designed for all. Be inspired by how you too can see art beyond just a typical object and treat it as an open invitation – to step in, to feel and to belong.
The artist
Sumay Cheah, a multidisciplinary artist based in Malaysia and Singapore, is known for her evocative and immersive works that evoke wonder and exploration often inspired by the interplay of light & shadow and her Peranakan heritage. Her studio, OtherHalf, for their recent art installation OH!Tenang, recently received the prestigious SGMARK Awards 2024 in the Experience Design category, the Golden Pin Design Award 2024 for Spatial Design and a finalist for the iF Design Awards based in Germany. An advocate for universal design, Sumay is passionate about creating thoughtful, sustainable, and inclusive spaces for all.
Fuelled by her desire to find solutions to a more circular economy and sustainable path for OtherHalf’s projects, Talii Studio, which places focus on design and building products and projects using sustainably sourced materials was born.
About OtherHalf Studio
As of 2020, OtherHalf has pledged to sustainably source their build materials and up-cycle build materials whenever possible as a move to be more responsible for the environment. We have also recently collaborated with a psychologist to explore the potential of art as a therapeutic and calming experience for the public (OH!Tenang/Calm, 2023)
