
Performing Arts as a Form of Communication

The speakers for this talk are mass communication students from UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College under the supervision of Mr Maizul Affendy and Mr Ian Barbosa. Both speakers had been involved in various mass communication projects and live performances such as stage performances under Penang Players Production, Georgetown Festival, and experimental art performances. The talk will be exploring the journey of adapting performing arts into mass communication through their learning process.
Derick Tan Khye Sian is pursuing his final year of a Bachelor’s Honours Degree in Media Production at UOWMKDU Penang, he has been in multiple projects where he showcased his robust skills in acting as a performer as well as his utilising his steadfast technical knowledge offstage as well. He is best known for his acting roles in The Last Date and HEAL-LANG, etc. Other than that, his previous roles include director and producer for the short film “Goodbye Shall Never See You Again”, director of photography for the documentary “Journey to the Beyond”, director of streaming for HEAL-LANG (Terakhir), etc. Currently, he is working as A Technical Director in A-Team Productions.
Sherllyn Sephrenia Sunny Anak Sherman has completed her internship for her Diploma in Mass Communication. Working for MyPenangCreative (MPC), her implacable ability to perform, guide, and lead has given her roles in stage managing and acting as she has starred in multiple performances for UOWMKDU Penang, Kakiseni, and many more. Her previous roles include hosting for Mini Mologue 9, stage manager for Mini Mologue 10 and The Last Date, performing for HEAL-LANG (Semula), etc. Her upcoming project will include her directorial debut of the 10-minute stage play “Desire”.
