Teoh Kooi Pei was born in Cameron Highlands, Malaysia, in 1984. She later lived
in Kedah until she graduated from the University of Malaya with Degree in Architecture. Now, she is a design architect, artist, and researcher based in Penang. She learned about ink painting during her Master’s Degree studies at Tongji University, Shanghai, in 2010.
With a strong interest in ink painting, she delved into exploring the creative use of traditional rice paper and ink in collision with novel mediums and techniques. She believes that ink painting is not only the inheritance of traditional culture or becoming just an interest. Instead, it is a technique that can hone the painter’s mastery of materials and structures and, at the same time, benefit life by enhancing aesthetics, ability, increasing self-awareness, focusing on the present, and more. Her cross-disciplinary work focuses on the intersection between traditional and contemporary subjects. She even develops architectural concepts according to the essence derived from her poetry artworks.
Her first solo exhibition, “When the East Meets the North” demonstrated her attitude towards encouraging obsolete and modern interactions. She then established her practice in 2019, Noom Art Studio, which focuses on ink painting visual art and digital visuals design, architectural design, and at the same time tutoring in the Ink Painting Society, Heng Ee Secondary School, Penang.
The artist will be on site from 12pm to 9pm on Friday.
