Creating a Comics Pitch

Part of a series of three workshops under ‘A Weekend of Comics and Illustration’.

 

Have a story you would like to submit to publishers, but don’t know how or what to pitch? This workshop covers the basics of what a pitch is, its structure and its materials, as well as tips on navigating the publishing industry as a comics creator. The workshop will also provide participants a chance to finetune their own pitch with personalised critiques from the facilitators.

In the workshop, participants will learn:

  • The goals and requirements of a comics pitch
  • The structure of a comics pitch
  • How to distill story concepts and ideas into a pitch format suitable for agents, editors and publishers in comics imprints
  • How to understand and follow different submission requirements
  • How to create sample materials for the pitch
  • Insights into navigating the overseas publishing industry as a new, unpublished author from Southeast Asia
  • Where to find agents, editors, publishers and resources

Recommended Age Group/ Participants:

Participants who are interested in developing and submitting a pitch to comics publishers, or participants who are interested in understanding the process of becoming an author in the (overseas) publishing industry. Prior experience in making comics, and bringing a pitch-ready idea, are recommended. This workshop does not teach drawing or writing techniques. Comics artists, writers and author-illustrators are welcome.

Lead Facilitator:

Reimena Yee is a strange and fancy illustrator, designer and graphic novelist from Kuala Lumpur. She is the author-illustrator of The World in Deeper Inspection (self-published), the Eisner and Mcduffie-nominated The Carpet Merchant of Konstantiniyya, (Unbound) and the upcoming Seance Tea Party (Random House Graphic). She is also the writer of The Makers Club series (Difference Engine SG).

She has illustrated for clients from Image, Hasbro, Girls Make Games, BOOM! Studios and Penguin Random House. She also edits for Hiveworks, a digital independent publisher of webcomics. Elsewhere, she is the co-founder of UNNAMED, a comics collective that aims to build community and resources for visual-literary creators in Southeast Asia, through workshops, panels and partnerships.
