Contrary Creatures – Christine Das and Yante Ismail

“Contrary Creatures” brings together wildlife conservation artist Christine Das and feminist artist Yante Ismail.
In this exhibition, they take very different subjects as their starting points: Christine’s whimsical elephants respond to the state of wildlife conservation, while Yante’s irreverent bird-women explore feminist ideas of agency and nonconformity.
Despite their different concerns, both artists are drawn to creatures that refuse to conform. Through humour and whimsy, “Contrary Creatures” celebrates their stubbornness, resilience and individuality, while asking how small acts of resistance can change the way we see the world.
The artworks are mixed media sculptures, and there will also be merchandise for sale, such as tote bags, stickers, keychains, and postcard-sized artworks.
Throughout the exhibition, Christine Das and Yante Ismail will be present to engage with visitors, share insights into their respective practices and the ideas behind “Contrary Creatures”, and answer questions and discuss the themes explored through their work.
Christine will also lead a workshop “Let Our Elepehants be Elephants”, full details here.
