Botanical Sketch Book Studies with Esther Geh

Explore the art of sketching live botanical subjects using pencil or ink, while learning to capture essential colour notes.
This session focuses on drawing from observation, helping you translate what you see onto the page with accuracy and sensitivity. If you’re new to watercolour, you’ll also be introduced to fundamental techniques, including laying washes and mixing colours.
Rather than aiming for polished, finished artworks, the emphasis is on the process—observing, thinking, connecting, and translating your experience onto paper.

Esther Geh is a Penang born artist with a passion for botanical subjects, painting in watercolour and occasionally in acrylic. She lived a large part of her life as a medical professional in Singapore and the UK prior to returning to Penang in 2007. The attention to detail required in her previous career as an anaesthetist, coupled with her love for nature, has been instrumental in the development of her personal style of botanical painting.
Esther’s current work explores the flora of Malaysia, with particular interest in : Plant migration ( identifying and differentiating indigenous species from introduced species which have become naturalised, or are so extensively cultivated in Malaysia that they are thought to be native to Malaysia);
Edible plants commonly used in our native cuisines, and plants native to our rainforests.
Esther has exhibited nationally and internationally, including with The Society of Botanical Artists’s annual exhibition in 2016, Georgetown Festival 2017 and 2018, and Open Studios Penang 2019. She participated in Belang in 2020, and her piece is now part of the Penang State Art Gallery’s permanent collection.
You can also view Esther’s work in the collections at The Art and Garden, Viva Victoria, Heap Seng at 29, Art Lane, Penang Hill Lower Station, and Eythrope.
