A City Girl in Balik Pulau is a series of illustrated haikus that reflect various aspects of BalikPulau town that have enthralled 11-year old Beatrice Liau, who moved to Penang in 2019. She is familiar with urban landscapes, having lived 9 years in Singapore and 2 years in New Zealand. Staying in Balik Pulau is the opposite of urban living as she is surrounded by paddy fields.  Fish and prawns are bought as the fishing boats come in with their daily catch, and freshly laid eggs are bought directly from the farm. She tries to capture this Balik Pulau spirit of community and connectedness with nature in her haikus.

Beatrice Liau is studying in Sri Tenby Primary School. She has stayed in Singapore, PetalingJaya, and Dunedin, and she hopes that Penang will be her longest stay. She enjoys watercolour painting, pencil drawing, and Penang food.  She loves hugging her dogs, making up haikus while in a traffic jam, and thinking there is nothing better than curling up with a good book to read.

Beatrice will be onsite working on her illustrated haikus on Saturday March 28th and April 4th from 1pm to 6pm on both days.
